Who Is Your Target Market

Simply put, your target market includes all of the different people whom you intend to serve.

However, to serve this group most effectively you need to segment your larger target market into smaller sub-groups. This segmenting process is done by researching and defining the specific customer profiles that live within your greater target market.

Your Ideal Customer

Each customer profile, or customer avatar as they are also known, represents a specific type of person who would be interested in the product or service that you offer.

If your market research is thorough, you can reliably predict who your best customers will be because they will generally share some common demographic and psychographic characteristics.

What are Demographics?

Demographics pertain to the quantitative measures of who your ideal customer is in relation to the greater population. Common demographic variables include:

  • Gender

  • Age

  • Location

  • Education

  • Relationship Status

  • Family Size

  • Career

  • Income Range

What are Psychographics?

Psychographics are all of the qualitative attitudes, values, opinions, and preferences that motivate your ideal client to buy. Common psychographic variables include:

  • Goals

  • Fav. Books

  • Fav. Movies

  • Fav. Magazines

  • Fav. Teams

  • Influencers Whom They Follow

  • Fears

  • Insecurities

  • Priorities

  • Lifestyle

  • Social Values

How to Use Market Research

In order to make money in business, you need to create a compelling offer. You need to know who to target and how to clearly demonstrate your ability to fill the void in their life with the exact value they need.

The success of your brand depends on it.

Study your target market and lock in on your ideal customer. You may have multiple customer avatars within your target market, which is perfectly fine. Just make sure that you speak to each of them in their own language. Talk to them in terms that they use about issues that they already care for.

Find a way to relate. That is what good marketing does.
